About John Blanchard

Johnny Blanchard signed with the Yankees out of Minneapolis' Central High School in 1951 for what a local sportswriter called the highest bonus ever paid a Twin Cities player. Yankees coach and Hall of Fame catcher Bill Dickey converted him from the outfield to catcher, and after a two-year Army hitch, Blanchard cracked the Yankees' roster for good in 1959. Backing up Yogi Berra and Elston Howard, he became, in writer Bill Madden's words, "probably the most famous third-string catcher in baseball history." He was behind the plate for Bill Mazeroski's Series-ending home run in Game 7 of the 1960 World Series, then broke out in 1961 with 21 homers in just 93 games, including four home runs in four consecutive at-bats over a three-game span — a major-league record. Blanchard won two rings (1961-62) and hit .345 across five World Series appearances, setting the career record for pinch-hit at-bats in the Fall Classic. His 1960 Topps card, issued the year after he stuck for good, stands as his rookie card.
