1960 Topps #284 Don Gross

About Don Gross
A right-hander until age seven, Don Gross broke his right arm in a washing-machine accident and switched to pitching and batting left-handed for good. Signed by Cincinnati out of Michigan State, he lost most of 1952 and all of 1953 to Army service before debuting with the Redlegs on July 21, 1955. His best season came in 1956, when he went 3-0 with a 1.95 ERA. On May 28, 1957, he carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning against Milwaukee before Bobby Thomson tripled and scored on Frank Torre's single, a 1-0 loss to Warren Spahn. That December, Cincinnati traded him to Pittsburgh for Bob Purkey — a deal Pirates GM Joe L. Brown later called the worst of his career, since Purkey won 103 games for Cincinnati. Gross pitched out of Pittsburgh's bullpen in 1958, but arm trouble limited him to five games before Pittsburgh released him to the minors in May 1960; he drew a $250 share of the club's World Series money that fall.
