About Harry Anderson

Harry Walter Anderson, a Maryland farm boy who signed with the Phillies for a $40,000 bonus out of West Chester State Teachers College in 1952, lost two seasons to the Army before breaking in as Philadelphia's left fielder in 1957, when he made the majors' All-Star Rookie team. Broadcaster Gene Kelly hung the nickname "Harry the Horse" on him, borrowed from the wise-guy gambler in Guys and Dolls — a nod, it was said, to his 6-foot-3, 205-pound build rather than any speed, since he stole only three bases in his career. His 1958 sophomore year was his peak: a .301 average, 23 home runs and 97 RBIs, prompting Reds manager Birdie Tebbetts to compare his wrists to Ted Williams'. He never approached those numbers again. In June 1960, not long after this card went to press, Philadelphia traded him with Wally Post to Cincinnati for Tony González and Lee Walls. Anderson finished his five-year career with a .264 average and 60 homers, and was inducted into the Delaware Sports Museum and Hall of Fame in 1992.
