About Tony Gonzalez

Born in Central Cunagua, Cuba, Andrés Antonio "Tony" González came up through Cincinnati's Cuban pipeline and the Havana Sugar Kings before debuting with the Reds on April 12, 1960, homering off future Hall of Famer Robin Roberts in his first game. That rookie season is pictured on his short-printed 1960 Topps high-number card (#507-572) with Cincinnati, just before a June 15 trade sent him to the Philadelphia Phillies for outfielders Harry Anderson and Wally Post. González anchored the Phillies' outfield for five seasons, peaking in 1967 with a career-high .339 average, second in the NL only to Roberto Clemente's batting-title mark. He also set personal bests with 20 home runs in 1962 and 36 doubles in 1963, and starred for Atlanta in the 1969 NL Championship Series, hitting .357 with a homer off Tom Seaver. Nicknamed "Little Dynamite" for how the ball exploded off his bat, the left-handed-hitting González played twelve big-league seasons across five teams, finishing with a .286 average, 103 homers, and 615 RBIs.
