About Ed Brinkman

Ted Williams taught Brinkman to wait for his pitch and hit the ball on the ground; coach Nellie Fox recommended a thicker-handled bat. In 1969 Brinkman batted a career-high .266 and scored 71 runs. He received Washington's outstanding-player award from David Eisenhower the following January. His seventh-series #711 is a high number from 1970 Topps.

Ed Brinkman played shortstop for Washington and Detroit during a 15-season major league career that produced 1,355 hits and a .224 average. A Western Hills High School teammate of Pete Rose in Cincinnati, he signed with the Senators in May 1961 and reached the majors that September. He won a Gold Glove and Detroit's Tiger of the Year award in 1972, when he went 72 consecutive games without an error, and made the 1973 All-Star team. His final season, 1975, took him through St. Louis, Texas and New York. He later taught fielding in Detroit's farm system, managed Montgomery in 1977 and worked as a White Sox coach and scout from 1983 through 2000.
