1970 Topps #389 Jim Shellenback

About Jim Shellenback
On an off day in July 1969, Shellenback married Jo Ann Wilshe in Fairfax, Virginia, and listed RFK Stadium as his usual residence on the marriage certificate. On the mound he made 38 appearances that season, 11 of them starts, with a 3.91 ERA. He struck out 57 in 101 1/3 innings and saved one game. A son, James Jr., was born in 1970. The Senators are the team on his #389, a fourth-series card in 1970 Topps.
Jim Shellenback was a left-handed pitcher from Riverside, California, and the nephew of longtime minor-league star and coach Frank Shellenback. Signed by the Yankees out of high school in 1961, he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1962 first-year draft and worked his way up through Gastonia, Asheville and Columbus, earning Class-A and Double-A All-Star honors along the way. He debuted with the Pirates on September 15, 1966, and spent parts of nine major-league seasons with Pittsburgh, the Washington Senators, the Texas Rangers and the Minnesota Twins, finishing with a 16-30 record and a 3.81 ERA over 165 games. A car accident in September 1967 left him with a broken leg and rib fractures, yet he returned to the majors by 1969. After his playing days ended in 1977, Shellenback became a longtime minor-league pitching coach, spending 18 seasons with the Twins' Rookie-level Elizabethton club before retiring in 2011.
