About Jim Qualls

Jim Qualls opened 1970 with Tacoma, hitting .100 in nine games, then played nine games for Montreal and went 1 for 9 with an RBI. Montreal sent him to the Buffalo Bisons of the International League in late May, and he played 67 games at Triple-A, hitting .281 with 3 home runs. The 1971 Topps #731 card, from the sixth series, lists him with the Cincinnati Reds. His next major league games came with the 1972 White Sox.

James Robert Qualls, born October 9, 1946, in Exeter, California, was a switch-hitting utility outfielder and infielder who spent parts of three seasons in the majors with the Chicago Cubs, Montreal Expos and Chicago White Sox between 1969 and 1972. Signed by the Cubs out of Tulare Western High School in 1964, he spent five seasons working through Chicago's minor league system, mostly at second base, before making the Cubs' Opening Day roster in 1969 as a center fielder and pinch-hitting specialist. Over 63 career games he hit .223 with 31 hits. On July 9, 1969, at Shea Stadium, his one-out single in the ninth inning broke up Tom Seaver's perfect-game bid in a 4-0 Mets win, and he remains known mainly for that at-bat. After his major league career ended, he played two seasons in Japan for the Kintetsu Buffaloes.
