1975 Topps #585 Chris Chambliss

About Chris Chambliss
Chris Chambliss broke in with Cleveland in 1971, arriving out of UCLA to win the American League Rookie of the Year award as the Indians' first baseman. Traded to the Yankees in April 1974 in a deal that sent four pitchers to Cleveland, he anchored New York's infield for six seasons. His signature moment came on October 14, 1976, leading off the ninth inning of the deciding ALCS Game 5 against Kansas City with a walk-off home run off Mark Littell that sent the Yankees to their first pennant since 1964, capping a series in which he hit .524. Fans stormed the field before he could touch home plate, and the resulting chaos led Major League Baseball to adopt what's still called the "Chris Chambliss Rule," letting umpires award a run when a runner can't reach the plate. He helped the Yankees win the 1977 and 1978 World Series, made the 1976 All-Star team, and won a Gold Glove in 1978. This 1975 Topps card, issued in his second Yankee season, predates that pennant-clinching swing by more than a year. Chambliss later coached, winning four more championships as the Yankees' hitting coach in 1996 and 1998-2000.
