1975 Topps #586 Tim McCarver

About Tim McCarver
A three-sport star at Memphis's Christian Brothers High School, Tim McCarver signed with the St. Louis Cardinals for $75,000 in 1959 and reached the majors before he turned 18. The left-handed-hitting catcher anchored two Cardinals championship clubs, batting .478 in the 1964 World Series with a tenth-inning, game-winning three-run homer in Game 5, then helping St. Louis beat Boston in seven games in the 1967 Series. A two-time All-Star (1966-67), he became the first catcher since 1900 to lead the National League in triples, with 13 in 1966, and finished runner-up to teammate Orlando Cepeda for the 1967 NL MVP award. Bob Gibson's preferred batterymate, McCarver later caught Steve Carlton for years in Philadelphia. Purchased by Boston in September 1974, he's pictured in a Red Sox cap on this 1975 Topps card, though the club released him that June and he re-signed with the Phillies days later, eventually becoming the 18th player to appear in four decades. He went on to a record-setting broadcasting career, earning the 2012 Ford C. Frick Award.
