About Chris Ward

Chris Gilbert Ward, a left-handed-hitting outfielder born May 18, 1949, in Oakland, California, was drafted three times before signing — by the Chicago White Sox out of Arroyo High School in 1967, by the White Sox again out of Chabot College in the 1968 January secondary phase, and by the Chicago Cubs in the third round of that June's secondary phase. He spent the better part of a decade advancing through the Cubs' farm system, twice batting over .300 in the high minors, including .340 in 70 games at Triple-A Wichita in 1973. After one pinch-hitting appearance in 1972, Ward got his real shot in 1974: 92 games as a pinch hitter, left fielder, and first baseman, batting .204 with a home run and 15 RBIs. He returned to Wichita and kept hitting — .275 in 1975, .307 in 1976 — but never made it back to Chicago. His card in the 1975 Topps set is both his rookie card and his last.
