1975 Topps #647 Claudell Washington
Claudell Washington's rookie card, with the All-Star Rookie trophy.

About Claudell Washington
Claudell Washington signed with the Oakland Athletics as a 17-year-old undrafted free agent in 1972 out of Berkeley, California, and rocketed through Oakland's system to debut in the majors on July 5, 1974. The left-handed-hitting outfielder helped the A's capture their third straight World Series title that October, batting .571 in the Fall Classic. His 1975 Topps card is his rookie card and carries the All-Star Rookie trophy, an honor he backed up: at just 20 he became one of the youngest All-Stars in major-league history, finishing fifth in the American League in batting average (.308) and second in stolen bases (40). Teammates called him "SuperWash," while his father's nickname for him was "Champ." Washington went on to a 17-season career with seven franchises, adding a second All-Star nod with Atlanta in 1984 and finishing with 164 home runs, 312 stolen bases and a .278 average. He is one of only 14 players to homer three times in a game in both leagues, and he struck out against Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan more than any other batter the flamethrower ever faced.
