About Larry Gura

Lawrence Cyril Gura, born November 26, 1947, in Joliet, Illinois, was a left-handed pitcher who broke into the majors with the Chicago Cubs on April 30, 1970, after starring on a national championship team at Arizona State. This 1975 Topps card catches him with the New York Yankees, where he pitched in 1974-75 before a trade sent him to Kansas City in 1976 — the move that made his career. Gura won in double figures seven straight seasons for the Royals (1978-84), made the 1980 All-Star team during his finest year (18-10, 2.95 ERA), and started Games 2 and 5 of the 1980 World Series. He tormented his old Yankees club, going 11-6 against them as a Royal. Off the mound, Gura's rigorous weightlifting and high-protein diet regimen — unusual enough in 1976 to draw a Sports Illustrated feature — made him an early pioneer of modern athlete conditioning. He retired in 1985 with a 126-97 record, 3.76 ERA and 801 strikeouts, and was later inducted into the Kansas City Royals Hall of Fame.
