1975 Topps #556 Tim Johnson

About Tim Johnson
Timothy Evald Johnson signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers as a free agent in 1967 and was still in their farm system when Milwaukee acquired him for Rick Auerbach just before Opening Day 1973. Handed the shortstop job as a rookie, he started every day for the Brewers that season, but lost the position in 1974 to a teenage Robin Yount and settled into a utility infielder's role around the diamond. His 1975 Topps card catches him in that reserve stretch, appearing in just 38 games for Milwaukee before the Brewers traded him to Toronto in 1978; he retired a year later with a .223 average over 516 games. Johnson's bigger baseball mark came decades later as Blue Jays manager, guiding Toronto to an 88-74 finish in 1998, though he was fired the following spring after admitting he had fabricated stories about combat service in Vietnam to motivate his players.
