About Al Oliver
A rangy line-drive hitter out of Portsmouth, Ohio, Al Oliver signed with Pittsburgh in 1964 for $5,000 rather than accept a basketball scholarship to Kent State. He debuted in September 1968, finished runner-up for 1969 NL Rookie of the Year, and by the early 1970s anchored the "Pittsburgh Lumber Company" alongside Willie Stargell and Roberto Clemente. On September 1, 1971, Oliver started at first base in baseball's first all-black lineup, then helped the Pirates beat Baltimore in that October's World Series. His #555 card in this 1975 Topps set catches him fresh off a season in which he hit .280 with 18 homers and 84 RBI, made his second career All-Star team, and helped the Pirates win another NL East flag before Cincinnati swept them in the NLCS. He went on to lead his league at least once in batting average, hits, doubles, RBI, and total bases, capped by the 1982 NL batting and RBI titles with Montreal. He retired with a .303 average, 2,743 hits, and seven All-Star nods, earning the nickname "Scoop" in the minors for his sure hands at first base. The Pirates inducted him into their team Hall of Fame in 2025.
