1975 Topps #632 Morris Nettles

About Morris Nettles
A speedy left-handed hitter, Morris Nettles is pictured on his recognized rookie card, 1975 Topps #632, as a California Angel. He had never played a varsity high school game when Angels scout Norm Sherry clocked him home-to-first in 3.7 seconds; California drafted him in the second round of the January 1970 draft out of Venice High School. Nettles led the Pioneer League in hitting at .369 in 1970 and the Texas League at .332 in 1972. He debuted on April 26, 1974, was optioned to Salt Lake City after 32 days, and returned that August to replace an injured Mickey Rivers, hitting .274 with 20 stolen bases in 56 games and driving in two runs during Nolan Ryan's third career no-hitter. He held center field in 1975, scored the Opening Day winning run, but slumped to .231 and lost the job by midseason. Traded to the Chicago White Sox that December, he never returned to the majors, finishing his career in Mexico by 1982. Nettles died in 2017.
