About Paul Casanova
Paulino "Paul" Casanova signed as a free agent with the Cleveland Indians out of Cuba in January 1960, then endured several releases by the Indians and Chicago Cubs and a stint with the barnstorming Indianapolis Clowns before catching on with the Washington Senators in October 1962. He debuted in the majors on September 18, 1965, became the Senators' regular catcher in 1966, and earned his only All-Star selection in 1967, when he also finished 21st in AL MVP voting. On June 12 that year, he caught all 22 innings of a marathon night game against the Chicago White Sox, driving in the winning run in the bottom of the 22nd — still the longest night game in major-league history. Traded to the Atlanta Braves in December 1971, Casanova served mainly as a backup and caught Phil Niekro's no-hitter on August 5, 1973, before an elbow injury ended his playing career in spring training 1975. This 1975 Topps card, issued the year he was released, captures the strong-armed receiver at the close of his 10-year big-league run.
