1975 Topps #634 Cy Acosta

About Cy Acosta
Cecilio Acosta Miranda broke into pro ball in 1966 with the Mineros de Fresnillo of the Mexican Central League, reached Triple-A with the Charros de Jalisco in 1968, and signed with the White Sox out of Tucson in 1971. The right-hander debuted June 4, 1972, and had his best season in 1973: 10-6, a 2.23 ERA, 18 saves. On June 20 he became the first American League pitcher to bat since the designated hitter's 1973 debut, entering after Chuck Tanner pulled Dick Allen and moved Tony Muser off DH to first base; the Comiskey Park bench cheered as Acosta, without his own bat or helmet, struck out against the Angels' Rich Hand. Card #634 shows him in White Sox flannels, though Chicago had sold him to the Phillies that March 17, weeks before the set reached shelves. He closed his four-year, 13-9, 2.66 ERA career with Philadelphia in 1975, then pitched 17 more seasons in the Mexican League, earning induction into the Mexican Professional Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005.
