About Chuck Dobson

Charles Thomas Dobson signed with the Kansas City Athletics in 1964 after starring at the University of Kansas and pitching for the U.S. team at the 1964 Summer Olympics baseball demonstration. The 6-foot-4 right-hander debuted for the A's on April 19, 1966, and blossomed into a workhorse, winning 15 or more games in three straight seasons (1969-1971) for the Kansas City/Oakland franchise; his five shutouts in 1970 tied Jim Palmer and Gaylord Perry for the major-league lead. In 1971 he went 15-5 and helped Oakland capture its first AL West title, but with the club on the verge of three straight World Series titles, chronic elbow calcification forced surgery that wiped out his 1972 season. He resurfaced only briefly with Oakland in 1973 before finishing his career with the California Angels in 1974-75, the club pictured on his 1975 Topps card, issued during what proved to be his final big-league season. He died in his native Kansas City on November 30, 2021, at age 77.
