About Pat Bourque
Patrick Daniel Bourque, a powerfully built 220-pound first baseman from Worcester, Massachusetts, starred in football and baseball at Holy Cross before the Cubs drafted him in the 33rd round in 1969. The Sporting News described him as "built like the village blacksmith," a tag that stuck as he tore up the minors, winning the 1972 American Association MVP with the Wichita Aeros after batting .279 with 20 home runs and 87 RBIs. Bourque debuted with Chicago on September 6, 1971, but with Billy Williams and Jim Hickman blocking first base, the Cubs traded him to Oakland on August 29, 1973, for Gonzalo Marquez. He earned a ring on Dick Williams' 1973 World Series champions, going 1-for-2 with a bunt single off Ray Sadecki in Game Three of the seven-game win over the Mets. Dealt to Minnesota in August 1974, Bourque never played in the majors again, closing his career at .215 with 12 homers and 61 RBIs in 201 games. He found stardom afterward in Mexico, winning the 1975 Mexican League batting crown with the Mexico City Diablos Rojos.
