About Fred Stanley
Frederick Blair Stanley broke into pro ball in 1966, drafted by the Houston Astros out of high school in Southern California, and reached the majors with the Seattle Pilots in 1969. A slick-fielding shortstop, he moved through Milwaukee, Cleveland and San Diego before New York acquired him in October 1972. Nicknamed "Chicken" for his skinny legs and the way he flapped his arms when he ran, Stanley became Yankees manager Billy Martin's shortstop of choice, seizing the job in May 1975 — the career-high, 117-game season pictured on this card — and holding it through the 1976 pennant. Bucky Dent's arrival in 1977 pushed Stanley into a steady utility role, and he collected back-to-back World Series rings in 1977 and 1978, filling in capably at short while Dent battled injuries. He later served as the San Francisco Giants' director of player development, and remains the last player to have appeared in a major league game for the Seattle Pilots.
