About this card

Cards #701-711 are the eleven four-player Rookie Prospects cards. A Rookie Prospects card is a rookie card for the players on it who had no earlier Topps flagship card - on #702, #707, #708 and #711 one of the four is not a rookie, so those count for the other three only, and the rookie-card answer on each card names the players it counts for.

The story on this card

Bergman shares Rookie Prospects card #705 with Miguel Dilone of the Pirates, Clint Hurdle of the Royals and Willie Norwood of the Twins, and it is the rookie card for all four. Bergman is printed with the Astros, but in 1977 he had played five games for the Yankees and collected one hit. That single came September 25 in Toronto off Mike Willis, his first in the majors after an 0-for-18 start. Commissioner Bowie Kuhn denied a Yankees request to nullify the trade that sent him to Houston. Dave Bergman was a left-handed first baseman who hit .258 over 17 seasons with the Yankees, Astros, Giants and Tigers. He started at first base for Detroit's 1984 World Series champions and hit a walk-off homer after a 13-pitch at-bat that June.

Dilone began 1978 with a new club: on April 4 the Pirates sent him, Elias Sosa and Mike Edwards to Oakland for Manny Sanguillen. The A's made him their regular left fielder, and he stole 50 bases and hit his first major league home run, off the Yankees' Don Gullett. His #705 is a Rookie Prospects card and his rookie card, shared with Dave Bergman, Clint Hurdle and Willie Norwood; it prints Dilone with the Pirates, Bergman with the Astros, Hurdle with the Royals and Norwood with the Twins. Switch-hitting outfielder who played 12 seasons for seven clubs between 1974 and 1985. He batted .341 with a team-record 61 steals for Cleveland in 1980 and retired with 267 career stolen bases.

Hurdle homered off Seattle's Glenn Abbott in his major-league debut on September 18, 1977, finishing that September with a .308 average in 9 games. Kansas City's Hurdle shared his 1978 Topps rookie card, #705, with Houston's Dave Bergman, Pittsburgh's Miguel Dilone and Minnesota's Willie Norwood. Kansas City outfielder Clint Hurdle collected 5 hits in 12 at-bats against Philadelphia in the 1980 World Series. He started in right field in 4 of the 6 games.

Norwood's 1977 debut with Minnesota lasted 39 games and produced three home runs. In 1978 he played 115 games in the outfield and hit .255 with 25 stolen bases. His rookie card, #705, puts him on a four-man Rookie Prospects card with Dave Bergman (Astros), Miguel Dilone (Pirates) and Clint Hurdle (Royals), all of them rookie cards too. Willie Norwood was a Minnesota Twins outfielder from 1977 to 1980, a right-handed hitter who played all three outfield spots and finished with a .242 average, 18 home runs and 41 stolen bases in 294 games.
