About this card

Cards #701-711 are the eleven four-player Rookie Prospects cards. A Rookie Prospects card is a rookie card for the players on it who had no earlier Topps flagship card - on #702, #707, #708 and #711 one of the four is not a rookie, so those count for the other three only, and the rookie-card answer on each card names the players it counts for.

The story on this card

Cage set a Toledo Mud Hens record with 30 doubles in 1977 and was an International League All-Star, then debuted with Cleveland on April 22, 1978. Card #706 is a four-player Rookie Prospects card, with Cage printed with Cleveland, Ted Cox with Boston, Pat Putnam with Texas and Dave Revering with Cincinnati. It is a rookie card for all four. Wayne Cage, a left-handed first baseman from Ruston, Louisiana, played 65 games for Cleveland in 1978 and 1979, then hit 62 home runs in two seasons for Japan's Hankyu Braves before finishing in the Mexican League.

Cox, a September call-up from Pawtucket, hit .362 for the 1977 Red Sox, with 21 hits in 58 at-bats. Boston went 10-3 in the 13 games he played, and his lone home run came off Detroit's Milt Wilcox on September 24. Topps placed him on four-man Rookie Prospects card #706, his rookie card, shared with Wayne Cage, Pat Putnam and Dave Revering, each also a rookie card. Cox is printed with the Red Sox, Cage with Cleveland, Putnam with Texas and Revering with Cincinnati. Third baseman who opened his major league career with six straight hits for the 1977 Red Sox, a record. He then played for Cleveland in 1978-79, Seattle in 1980 and Toronto in 1981.

Putnam shares the four-player Rookie Prospects card #706 with Wayne Cage, Ted Cox and Dave Revering, and it is a rookie card for all four. He had debuted September 2, 1977 as a designated hitter against Boston and batted .308 in 11 games. In 1978 he hit .309 with 21 home runs at Tucson. He then went 7-for-46 in 20 games with Texas, including his first major league homer on September 24 against Seattle. Pat Putnam, a left-handed first baseman, was The Sporting News Minor League Player of the Year in 1976 and its American League Rookie of the Year in 1979 with Texas, then led Seattle with 19 home runs in 1983 before playing in Japan.

Revering took over first base for Oakland in 1978 after a winter of trades. In December 1977 the Reds agreed to send him and $1.75 million to the Athletics for Vida Blue, but Commissioner Bowie Kuhn vetoed it. A new trade on February 25 sent him to Oakland for Doug Bair. He played 152 games and hit .271 with 16 homers. His rookie card, #706, is a Rookie Prospects card shared with Wayne Cage (Cleveland), Ted Cox (Boston) and Pat Putnam (Texas), and prints Revering with Cincinnati. Left-handed-hitting first baseman who played 557 games from 1978 to 1982 for the Athletics, Yankees, Blue Jays and Mariners, hitting .265 with 62 home runs and 234 RBIs.
