About Bill Wight
William Robert Wight (1922-2007) was a left-handed pitcher signed out of Oakland by the New York Yankees, beginning his professional career in 1941 with the Idaho Falls Russets. He reached the majors in 1946 and pitched twelve seasons for eight clubs: the Yankees, White Sox, Red Sox, Tigers, Indians, Orioles, Reds, and Cardinals. His finest year came in 1949 with Chicago, when he won 15 games with 14 complete games, three shutouts, and 245 innings pitched. Wight finished 77-99 with a 3.95 ERA and 574 strikeouts in 347 appearances, and was renowned for a deceptive pickoff move modeled after Walter Mails. A notoriously weak hitter, he set the American League record for most at-bats in a season without a hit (61 in 1950). He never made an All-Star team or the Hall of Fame, but after retiring he scouted for 37 years, signing Hall of Famer Joe Morgan plus Dale Murphy, Dusty Baker, and David Justice. This scarce Series Four card captures his 1955-1957 stint with the Baltimore Orioles.
