1957 Topps #257 Walt Dropo

About Walt Dropo
Walt Dropo, "The Moose from Moosup" — the nickname pairing his Moosup, Connecticut hometown with his 6-foot-5, 220-pound frame — was a three-sport star at UConn, drafted by both the NFL's Chicago Bears and the BAA's Providence Steamrollers before choosing baseball with the Red Sox in 1947. His 1950 season remains one of the greatest rookie years ever: a .322 average, 34 home runs, a league-leading 144 RBIs and 326 total bases, a starting spot in the All-Star Game, and the AL Rookie of the Year award — the first ever for a Red Sox player. In July 1952, shortly after a trade to Detroit, he rapped 12 consecutive hits to tie Pinky Higgins' major-league record. Dropo joined the White Sox in 1955, belting 19 homers in his first Chicago season, and this card catches him midway through his four years as a South Side first baseman. He retired in 1961 with 152 home runs, 704 RBIs and a .270 average across 13 seasons.
