About Steve Gromek
A Hamtramck, Michigan native signed by Cleveland as an infielder in 1939, Steve Gromek switched to the mound in 1940 after a shoulder injury and rode a rising sidearm fastball to a 17-year career with the Indians (1941-53) and Tigers (1953-57). He won 19 games with a 2.55 ERA in 1945, earning All-Star selection in a year the game was cancelled by wartime travel restrictions. His signature moment came in Game 4 of the 1948 World Series: a 2-1 complete-game win over the Boston Braves, after which a photo of Gromek joyfully hugging Larry Doby, whose homer won the game, became an enduring symbol of baseball's integration. Traded to Detroit in June 1953, he went 18-16 with a 2.74 ERA as the Tigers' 1954 Opening Day starter and finished 123-108 with a 3.41 ERA. This card arrived during his final season; back trouble limited him to 15 games before an August 1957 retirement.
