About this card

Cards #553-572 close the set as the Sport Magazine All-Star run, and they sit inside the scarce high-number series - which is why they are the hardest twenty cards in the set to finish.

About Bill Skowron

Bill Skowron signed with the Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1950 out of Purdue University, where he'd set a Big Ten record batting .500 as a sophomore. Nicknamed "Moose" — shortened from "Mussolini," the name his grandfather's haircut earned him as a boy — he debuted in 1954, platooning at first base before winning the job in 1958. Skowron made seven All-Star teams as a Yankee and helped the club to four World Series titles (1956, 1958, 1961, 1962); his game-six RBI and game-seven three-run homer keyed New York's comeback from a 3-1 deficit in 1958. Traded to the Dodgers for pitcher Stan Williams after 1962, he got the last laugh that October, batting .385 with a homer as Los Angeles swept his former club — one of the few players to win back-to-back titles with different teams. He closed his 14-year career with the Senators, White Sox and Angels, an eighth All-Star nod coming in 1965, finishing with a .282 average, 211 home runs and 888 RBIs. On the 1960 Topps set, his stardom earns him two cards: the Yankees base issue (#370) and the short-printed high-number Sport Magazine All-Star subset (#553).
