About Willie McCovey
Willie McCovey signed with the Giants organization in 1955 for a $500 bonus, batting .305 with 19 homers as a 17-year-old at Sandersville of the Georgia State League. Four years and three minor-league stops later, the left-handed-swinging first baseman was called up to San Francisco on July 30, 1959, going 4-for-4 against Robin Roberts in his debut. He hit .354 with 13 home runs in just 52 games and was the unanimous choice for NL Rookie of the Year — Topps, caught without a current photo, ran a painted portrait on his card. McCovey anchored the Giants' order for parts of three decades, winning the 1969 NL MVP (45 HR, 126 RBI, .320) and three home run titles, and making six All-Star teams. His signature moment came in Game 7 of the 1962 World Series, when his ninth-inning line drive was speared by Yankees second baseman Bobby Richardson. Long-armed and 6-foot-4, he was nicknamed "Stretch," and finished with 521 home runs. Elected to the Hall of Fame in 1986 on the first ballot (81.4%), he's also honored on card #316's inaugural All-Star Rookie trophy subset and the short-printed #554 high number.
