About Bud Byerly
Eldred William "Bud" Byerly broke into the majors with his hometown St. Louis Cardinals in September 1943, debuting after the club had already clinched the pennant. The following October he got into the 1944 World Series, working the final two innings of Game Three against the crosstown St. Louis Browns and striking out Al Zarilla, as the Cardinals went on to take the title in six games. After four years rebuilding his career in the high minors, Byerly resurfaced with Cincinnati in 1950 and later became a durable Washington Senators reliever, setting career highs in 1957 with six wins and six saves. He also pitched for the Boston Red Sox before finishing his eleven big-league seasons with the San Francisco Giants in 1959-60, going a perfect 1-0 both years. His final major-league appearance came July 21, 1960, a hitless relief inning against Philadelphia, the same season pictured on his 1960 Topps card. He closed with a 22-22 record, a 3.70 ERA, and 14 saves in 237 games.
