About Charlie Maxwell

Charlie Maxwell broke into pro ball in 1947 with the Boston Red Sox organization, switching from pitcher to outfielder in the low minors once a manager saw more promise in his bat than his control. He debuted with Boston in 1950, spent four years blocked by Ted Williams, and was sold to Baltimore before Detroit claimed him off waivers in May 1955. As the Tigers' left fielder through the late 1950s, the left-handed-hitting Maxwell made back-to-back All-Star teams (1956-57), twice led American League outfielders in fielding percentage, and in 1960 became the first major leaguer to hit five extra-inning home runs in a season. He earned the nickname "Sunday Charlie," also "the Sabbath Slugger," for a knack of homering on the Sabbath -- 40 of his 148 career home runs came on Sundays -- sealed on May 3, 1959, when he blasted four home runs in four straight at-bats in a doubleheader sweep of the Yankees, joining Lou Gehrig, Jimmy Foxx, and Ted Williams among the few to do it. His 1960 Topps card (#443) shows him with Detroit near the peak of that run, two years before a trade sent him to the White Sox to close out his career.
