About Jerry Kindall

Jerry Kindall arrived in the majors as one of the era's headline bonus babies, signing with the Chicago Cubs for a reported $50,000 the day after his University of Minnesota Golden Gophers won the 1956 College World Series, where he hit for the cycle. Baseball's bonus rule kept the 21-year-old on Chicago's roster before he'd faced a day of minor-league pitching; he debuted July 1, 1956, as a pinch-runner. Nicknamed "Slim" for his lean 6-foot-2, 175-pound frame, Kindall manned second, third and short for the Cubs (1956-58, 1960-61) — the stretch pictured on this 1960 Topps card — before finishing with Cleveland (1962-64) and his hometown Minnesota Twins (1964-65), reaching the pennant-winning 1965 club. He hit .213 with 44 home runs over 742 games. His bigger legacy came later: 24 seasons coaching the University of Arizona, 860 wins, and three College World Series titles (1976, 1980, 1986), earning Kindall a spot in the College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007.
