1960 Topps #445 Warren Spahn

About Warren Spahn
Warren Spahn broke into pro ball with the Boston Braves organization in 1942, then lost three full seasons to World War II Army service before returning to anchor the Braves' rotation from 1946 through the franchise's 1953 move to Milwaukee. The left-hander won 20 or more games 13 times, led the National League in wins eight times, and captured the 1957 Cy Young Award while pitching Milwaukee to a World Series title. He threw two no-hitters, in 1960 and 1961, at ages 39 and 40, and finished his 21-year career with 363 wins — still the most by any left-handed pitcher in major-league history. Teammates called him "Hooks," a nickname born from the hook-like shape his nose took after being struck by a thrown ball. Spahn was a 17-time All-Star and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973, his first year of eligibility, with 82.9% of the vote. His 1960 Topps card, #445, catches him mid-career with the Milwaukee Braves — the same season he threw the first of those two no-hitters.
