About Ellis Burton
Ellis Narrington Burton, a switch-hitting outfielder from Los Angeles, signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1955. Two years later his car went off a 115-foot cliff, breaking his collarbone and causing a concussion and internal injuries. The Pirates left him exposed in the 1957 minor-league draft, and the Cardinals claimed him for $3,500. Burton battled back to hit .286 with a Texas League-high 41 doubles for Houston in 1958, prompting The Sporting News to dub him the "Cardinals Comet" that spring. His 1960 Topps card catches him having beaten the odds onto St. Louis' Opening Day roster as a reserve outfielder behind Stan Musial and Curt Flood. Traded to Toronto after the season, Burton returned to the majors with Cleveland and the Cubs through 1965, finishing with a .216 average and 17 home runs in five big-league seasons. On May 3, 1961, playing for Toronto, he became the first switch-hitter in organized-ball history to homer from both sides of the plate in the same inning.
