1960 Topps #287 Felipe Alou

About Felipe Alou
Felipe Alou's 1960 Topps card (#287) shows him with the San Francisco Giants, which signed him out of the Dominican Republic for $200 in November 1955. He broke into pro ball in the segregated Evangeline League in 1956, reassigned from Baton Rouge to Cocoa, Florida amid local segregation, then debuted in the majors on June 8, 1958, becoming the first Dominican to play regularly in the big leagues. On September 15, 1963, he joined brothers Matty and Jesús for the only all-brother outfield in major league history. A three-time All-Star (1962, 1966, 1968), Alou hit .327 with a career-high 218 hits and 31 homers in 1966, finishing second in the NL batting race, and twice led the league in hits across a 17-year career with the Giants, Braves, Athletics, Yankees, Expos and Brewers that ended with 2,101 hits, 206 home runs and a .286 average. He later managed the Expos (1992-2001, NL Manager of the Year in 1994) and Giants (2003-2006), becoming one of three men with 2,000 hits, 200 homers and 1,000 managerial wins. Known at home as El Panqué de Haina -- "Sweet Bread of Haina" -- he entered the Canadian and Caribbean Baseball Halls of Fame.
