About Frank Robinson

Frank Robinson signed with the Reds out of Oakland's McClymonds High for $3,500 in 1953 and reached Cincinnati in 1956, tying the rookie home run record with 38 and winning National League Rookie of the Year. He anchored the Reds through 1965, taking the 1961 NL MVP after driving Cincinnati to the pennant and hitting a career-high .342 the following season. Traded to Baltimore that December in a deal Reds owner Bill DeWitt would come to regret, Robinson won the Triple Crown and AL MVP in 1966, then was named World Series MVP as the Orioles swept the Dodgers — the first and still only player to win MVP in both leagues. A second title followed with Baltimore in 1970, and he finished with 586 home runs and 2,943 hits over 21 seasons. In the Orioles clubhouse he presided over a kangaroo court as "the Judge," fining teammates for baseball sins in a robe and mop wig. In 1975, as Cleveland's player-manager, he became the first Black manager in major-league history. Robinson entered the Hall of Fame in 1982, his first year of eligibility. His 1960 Topps card #490 catches him mid-Cincinnati, a year before that MVP pennant season.
