1960 Topps #489 Steve Ridzik

About Steve Ridzik
Stephen George Ridzik signed with the Philadelphia Phillies at 16 in 1945 and spent parts of six seasons there, including a relief outing in his September 1950 debut for the pennant-winning Whiz Kids. A right-hander who mixed a fastball and curve with a palmball, he earned the nickname "Thomas Edison" in Philadelphia for constantly tinkering with his repertoire. After stops with the Redlegs, Giants, and Indians, Cleveland sold him to Fort Worth, the Cubs' Triple-A club, where he went 15-8 in 1959. He reported to the Cubs' 1960 spring camp -- the team pictured on his 1960 Topps card -- but never pitched for Chicago in the majors, sold instead to the Toronto Maple Leafs before Opening Day. Ridzik resurfaced with Washington in 1963 after developing a knuckleball, then closed his career with the Phillies in 1966, finishing 39-38 with a 3.79 ERA and 406 strikeouts over 12 major-league seasons. He later helped found the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association.
