About Norm Cash
Norman Dalton Cash grew up on a cotton farm in Justiceburg, Texas, and set a rushing record at Sul Ross State College before signing with the Chicago White Sox in 1955. He reached the majors in 1958 and was dealt to Cleveland that December in the trade that returned Minnie Miñoso to Chicago. Indians GM Frank Lane flipped him to Detroit for Steve Demeter just before Opening Day 1960, too late for a reshoot: his 1960 Topps card #488 lists Cash as a Tiger while picturing him in the Cleveland cap he never wore in a big-league game. Cash went on to anchor Detroit's lineup at first base for fifteen seasons. His 1961 season remains one of the game's great flukes, a league-leading .361 average, .487 on-base percentage and 41 homers that no Tiger topped for average until 2007. He made five All-Star teams, won a 1968 World Series ring — singling off Bob Gibson to spark Detroit's Game 7 rally — and retired with 377 home runs, 373 of them as a Tiger, still tied for second in franchise history. Broadcaster Ernie Harwell dubbed him "Stormin' Norman" for his hard-charging, harder-living clubhouse presence, and he was among the last players allowed to bat without a helmet.
