About Tom Sturdivant
Thomas Virgil Sturdivant broke into pro ball in 1948, signed out of Oklahoma City's Capitol Hill High School by New York Yankees scout Tom Greenwade -- the same scout who signed fellow Oklahoman Mickey Mantle a year later. Originally an infielder, Sturdivant switched to pitching during a two-year Army hitch and reached the Yankees in 1955. His sharp-breaking curveball earned him the nickname "Snake," and in 1956 he went 16-8, then started and won Game Four of the World Series, evening it at two apiece as New York beat Brooklyn in seven. He followed with a 16-6, 2.54 ERA season in 1957 that tied for the American League lead in winning percentage, and was on the roster again when the Yankees topped Milwaukee for the 1958 title, his second championship. Arm and heel injuries that year led to trades to Kansas City and then Boston, where Sturdivant made the 1960 Opening Day start against Washington before settling into a swingman's role for the Red Sox. He pitched a decade for seven clubs, finishing 59-51 with 704 strikeouts, then made an unsuccessful run for the Oklahoma State Senate.
