About Bobby Del Greco

Robert George Del Greco grew up the youngest of ten children in Pittsburgh's Hill District, quit high school after his father's death, and signed with the hometown Pirates for $500 in 1950. A brilliant defensive center fielder whose bat never matched his glove, he debuted with a 3-for-4 game in 1952 and spent nine seasons with six clubs — Pirates, Cardinals, Cubs, Yankees, Athletics, and Phillies. Traded to St. Louis in the 1956 deal that brought Bill Virdon to Pittsburgh, he made two late-inning catches that helped the Cardinals edge Milwaukee in a pennant-race game. Card #486 shows him as the Phillies' 1960 Opening Day center fielder; "The Greek," from the Italian translation of his surname, twice robbed the Pirates with diving catches at Connie Mack Stadium that July, prompting Pittsburgh's Danny Murtaugh to say he'd "rooted us out of the league." He finished at .229 with 42 homers in 731 games and was posthumously inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2022.
