About Ken Boyer

Ken Boyer signed with the Cardinals in 1949 as a pitcher prized for his arm, but a move to third base in the low minors revealed the far better tool: his bat. By 1955 he was St. Louis's starting third baseman, and this 1960 Topps card catches him in the middle of his prime — that year he hit .304, led the club in home runs and RBI, and was named National League Player of the Month for September after batting .385. Boyer anchored the Cardinals for eleven seasons, winning five Gold Gloves (1958-61, 1963) and eleven All-Star selections across seven seasons. His signature year came in 1964: a .295 average and league-leading 119 RBI earned him the NL MVP award, and in the World Series he hit a Game 4 grand slam off Al Downing and collected three hits in the Game 7 clincher as St. Louis beat the Yankees for the title. He retired with 282 home runs, 2,143 hits and a .287 average over 15 seasons, later managing the Cardinals from 1978-80. St. Louis retired his No. 14 in 1984; he remains the only Cardinal with a retired number never elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
