About Georges Maranda
Georges Henri Maranda, a right-handed pitcher born January 15, 1932, in Lévis, Québec, signed with the Boston Braves in 1951 and spent most of the 1950s in the minors. He broke out in 1959, going 18-6 to lead the American Association in wins for Triple-A Louisville and earning league All-Star honors alongside fellow Quebecers Claude Raymond and Ron Piché. San Francisco took him in that winter's Rule 5 draft, and his No. 479 card in the 1960 Topps set is his recognized rookie. Maranda spent all of 1960 with the Giants, working 17 games with four starts; his only win of the year came August 21 at Wrigley Field, holding the Cubs to three earned runs over seven innings in a 5-3 victory. Minnesota claimed him in the next Rule 5 draft, and he logged one more win in 1962 before closing his career in the minors in 1963. Lévis later named its ballpark Stade Georges Maranda in his honor, and he entered the Québec Baseball Hall of Fame in 2000.
