About Yogi Berra

Lawrence Peter "Yogi" Berra signed with the Yankees in October 1942 for the $500 bonus he held out for, after his hometown Cardinals came up short twice and the St. Louis Browns wouldn't offer a bonus at all. He served as a Navy gunner during the Normandy landings before debuting in the majors in 1946, then spent 18 seasons anchoring New York's dynasty from behind the plate. An 18-time All-Star and three-time American League MVP (1951, 1954, 1955), Berra played in 14 World Series as a player and won 10 championships — more than anyone in history — including catching Don Larsen's perfect game in 1956. He retired with a .285 average, 358 home runs and 1,430 RBIs. His nickname dates to boyhood: watching a turbaned Hindu snake charmer waddle across a movie screen, a friend cracked that he walked just like Berra, and "Yogi" replaced his childhood nickname "Lawdie" for good. Card #480 in the 1960 Topps set catches him mid-dynasty, still the Yankees' everyday catcher. Inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972, Berra went on to manage both the Yankees and Mets to pennants and became as famous for his tangled "Yogi-isms" as for his ten rings.
