1960 Topps #481 Wes Stock

About Wes Stock
Wesley Gay Stock pitched for Washington State College before signing with the Orioles for $4,000 in 1956, then losing two seasons to Army service. He debuted for Baltimore on April 19, 1959, and by 1961 had settled in as a workhorse middle reliever, teaming with left-hander Billy Hoeft to set up closer Hoyt Wilhelm. On May 26, 1963, Stock won both ends of a doubleheader against Cleveland with two perfect innings in the opener and a relief win in the nightcap — still the only time an Orioles pitcher has turned that trick. Traded to Kansas City for catcher Charlie Lau in June 1964 after going 19-4 in Baltimore, he finished with a 27-13 record and 365 strikeouts over 321 games, only three as a starter. Stock later coached pitchers for the Mets, Brewers, Mariners and Oakland, winning back-to-back World Series titles with the A's in 1973-74. His 1960 Topps #481 card, issued the year he cracked the Orioles' bullpen for good, is recognized as his rookie card.
