About Hank Aguirre
Henry John "Hank" Aguirre broke into pro ball in 1951, signed by Cleveland scout Tom Downey after playing at East Los Angeles College, and reached the majors with the Indians in 1955, tossing a three-hit shutout against Detroit in his first big-league start. Traded to the Tigers in a four-player deal before 1958, the left-hander spent a decade in Detroit, moving from bullpen work into the rotation by 1962, the best year of his career. He led the American League with a 2.21 ERA, made the All-Star team, and topped the league in both WHIP and pitching WAR. Teammates called him "Mex" for his Mexican heritage; he weathered ethnic slurs early on but became a popular clubhouse figure and later worked to open doors for Latinos in baseball. Aguirre closed his 16-year career with the Dodgers and Cubs, finishing 75-72 with a 3.25 ERA, then built Mexican Industries into a major Detroit auto-parts supplier. His 1960 Topps card, #546, is a scarcer short-printed high number from that set.
