About Bob Aspromonte

Bob Aspromonte broke in with the Brooklyn Dodgers as an 18-year-old pinch hitter in September 1956, a single plate appearance that later made him the last former Brooklyn Dodger to appear in a major-league game. After three years in the minors, he won a roster spot with the 1960 Los Angeles Dodgers, the season pictured on this short-printed high-number card (#507-572), now recognized as his rookie card. Left exposed in the 1961 expansion draft, Aspromonte was taken by the Houston Colt .45s and, on April 10, 1962, became the expansion franchise's first-ever batter, singling and scoring its first run. Fondly nicknamed "Aspro" by Houston fans, he anchored third base for the Colt .45s/Astros through 1968, caught the ceremonial first pitch from astronaut Alan Shepard when the Astrodome opened in 1965, and set a club record with six grand slams that stood until 2011. He closed his career with Atlanta and the Mets, retiring in 1971, and was inducted into the Houston Astros Hall of Fame in 2019.
