About Don Mincher
Don Mincher signed out of Huntsville, Alabama's S. R. Butler High School with the Chicago White Sox in 1956, turning down a football scholarship to Alabama. After four years in the White Sox chain, he was traded to Washington with Earl Battey for Roy Sievers in April 1960 and debuted for the Senators on April 18 — the season pictured on his short-printed, high-number 1960 Topps card (#548), a recognized rookie issue. The left-handed-hitting first baseman followed the franchise to Minnesota, made two All-Star teams (1967 Angels, 1969 Pilots), and hit 200 home runs across 13 seasons with the Senators/Twins, Angels, Pilots, Athletics, expansion Senators/Rangers and Athletics again. In the 1965 World Series he homered off Don Drysdale in Game One, and he won a ring with Oakland in 1972. Known in his hometown as "Mr. Baseball of Huntsville" for his popularity there, Mincher was the only player to appear for both the original Senators/Twins and expansion Senators/Rangers franchises, seeing the finish of each Washington club's American League run, and later ran the Double-A Huntsville Stars for 16 years.
