1960 Topps #549 John Buzhardt

About John Buzhardt
John William Buzhardt was born August 17, 1936, in Prosperity, South Carolina. Cubs scout Rube Wilson signed the 6'2" right-hander off a semi-pro field for $250 in 1954. After four years in Chicago's system, he debuted in September 1958 and beat both Don Drysdale and Sandy Koufax in his first two starts. He one-hit the Phillies on June 21, 1959, and that winter Philadelphia acquired him, Jim Woods, and Alvin Dark in the trade that sent Richie Ashburn to Chicago — making 1960, pictured on his short-printed high-number Topps card, his first season in Phillies red. As a Phillie, Buzhardt bracketed history: his July 28, 1961 win over the Giants preceded the club's modern-record 23-game losing streak, and his August 20 victory over the Milwaukee Braves ended it. Teammates and manager Gene Mauch called him "Buzz." Traded to the White Sox in 1962, he anchored a strong rotation, going 13-8 in 1965. He retired in 1968 with a 71-96 record and 3.66 ERA, later working as a Kodak foreman back in Prosperity, where he died in 2008.
