About Harvey Haddix

Harvey Haddix Jr. signed with the Cardinals organization out of a 1943 Columbus tryout camp, but a wartime farm deferment delayed his professional debut until 1947. Working through St. Louis's system, he earned the nickname "The Kitten" at Triple-A Columbus, where general manager George Sisler Jr. compared the undersized lefty to veteran Cardinals pitcher Harry Brecheen, known as "Harry the Cat." Haddix reached the majors in 1952 and had his finest season in 1953, going 20-9 with a 3.06 ERA and six shutouts, one of three All-Star selections (1953-55). After stops with the Phillies and Reds, he joined the Pirates in 1959 and that May 26 threw the most celebrated game in franchise history, retiring 36 consecutive Milwaukee Braves over 12 perfect innings before an error and Joe Adcock's blow, ruled a double, cost him the no-hitter in the 13th. Shown here with the Pirates, Haddix helped Pittsburgh capture the 1960 World Series, working a scoreless ninth in Game Seven before Bill Mazeroski's title-clinching homer. He added three straight Gold Gloves (1958-60), later coached Pittsburgh's staff to the 1979 championship, and retired with 136 wins and 1,575 strikeouts. He is not in the Hall of Fame.
