About Harry Chiti
Harry Chiti signed with the Chicago Cubs out of Detroit's Northwestern High for a reported $20,000 bonus and debuted in the majors in September 1950 at age seventeen. A right-handed catcher valued for handling knuckleball pitchers, he lost two seasons to Army service in Korea, then posted a career-best .231 average with 11 home runs over 113 games for the Cubs in 1955. Traded to the Yankees after 1956, he never played for New York, instead reaching the Kansas City Athletics in the 1957 Rule 5 Draft. His 1960 Topps card, #339, catches him with Kansas City that summer, before Detroit bought his contract. Later dealt to Cleveland, Chiti was sold to the expansion Mets in 1962; after hitting .195 in fifteen games, he was returned to Cleveland as the player to be named later owed from the trade that had brought him to New York, making him the first big leaguer ever traded for himself. He finished with a .238 average, 41 homers and 179 RBI in 502 games over ten seasons, and died in 2002.
