About Ray Monzant

Ramón Monzant, listed as Ray on his Topps cards, was a Venezuelan right-hander who spent his entire six-year major league career with the New York and San Francisco Giants, 1954-1960. Discovered at a Florida tryout camp, he turned pro in 1952 with the Class-D Shelby Farmers, who sold him to the Giants organization. In 1953 he went 23-6 for the Danville Leafs, leading the Carolina League in strikeouts and winning its MVP award. Promoted to the majors in 1954, he became the eighth Venezuelan-born big leaguer. On April 29, 1956, Del Ennis broke up his no-hitter with a first-inning single, and on April 16, 1958, he started the first night game played on the West Coast, a matchup with the Dodgers after both clubs' cross-country move. Arm trouble and homesickness led him to sit out 1959. He returned in 1960 for one last Giants appearance before a broken leg at Triple-A Tacoma ended his career at 16-21, 4.38 ERA, with 201 strikeouts. Monzant was inducted into the Venezuelan Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006 and the Navegantes del Magallanes Hall of Fame in 2012.
