About Cal Neeman
Calvin Amandus Neeman broke in with the Chicago Cubs on April 16, 1957, after New York Yankees scout Lou Maguolo signed him out of Illinois Wesleyan University in 1949; his climb through the Yankees' system was interrupted by U.S. Army service during the Korean War. Left unprotected in the December 1956 Rule 5 draft, Neeman won the Cubs' starting catching job that spring and set a National League record for games caught by a rookie catcher, earning The Sporting News' All-Rookie honors and a teammate vote as the club's most valuable player over a 43-homer Ernie Banks. This 1960 Topps card catches him mid-transition: pictured with the Cubs even as he was dealt, nineteen games into the season, to the Philadelphia Phillies along with Tony Taylor for Ed Bouchee and Don Cardwell. Neeman went on to catch for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Cleveland Indians and Washington Senators before retiring in 1963 with 30 home runs and a .224 average over 376 major-league games.
